Raising meat chickens: the nitty gritty

  1. I think there needs to be more posts just like this one. It’s the practical and logical side to farming, and actually shows just how much things cost, and how the hours of work involved in cleaning and feeding and general maintance seem to just disappear….

Maybe hatching up your own meat birds in future could be possible? Hmmm…. but you definitely get gold stars for bravery (the storm) and perseverance (plucking by hand)! Well done!

  2. Your cost breakdown was interesting. My grandparents raised chickens, mostly selling eggs. As prices for feed rose it became their hobby; they lost money on it all every week.

  3. Very informative, thank you! I’ve been playing with the idea of having meat chickens as well as laying hens when we eventually have our own place – more like a tug-o-war really, since I love to eat chicken but I’m not sure if I could bring myself to do the actual butchering. But reading posts like this one seems to be helping in distancing my emotional side from the job. I think with more knowledge I might be able to convince myself! So thank you! 🙂

    1. You can absolutely do it, and you’ll be proud of yourself for it. Killing an animal is never easy, and I don’t think it should be. But it’s good for us meat eaters to get up close and personal with the exchange that takes place when we eat meat. Good luck! I found it emotionally helpful to have an experienced friend walk me through it the first time.

      1. Thank you Gwen! I’ll have to find some homesteading or farming friends haha 🙂 I’ve got a few years to go before it’s even a possibility but trying to learn all I can before it does! 🙂
